Southwest's 2027 Rapid Rewards Overhaul: Companion Pass Becomes a Status Benefit

Starting January 1, 2027, Southwest replaces A-List and A-List Preferred with Silver, Gold and Platinum, and moves the Companion Pass behind elite status. Signup bonuses, referrals, anniversary points and category multipliers stop counting. One window remains: get approved by December 2, 2026 and your welcome bonus still qualifies.

The short version

Southwest is overhauling Rapid Rewards effective January 1, 2027. The headline change: the Companion Pass stops being something you can earn through credit card welcome bonuses and becomes a benefit attached to elite status.

If you have been planning to pick up a Southwest card to get a Companion Pass the traditional way, there is exactly one window left — approval on or before December 2, 2026.

Elite status is rebuilt from scratch

A-List and A-List Preferred are going away. Three new tiers replace them, qualified by Tier Qualifying Points (TQPs) or flight count:

TierTQPsor Flights
Silver35,00025
Gold65,00050
Platinum140,000100

Members who earn A-List in 2026 are given Silver in 2027. Members who earn A-List Preferred in 2026 are given Gold. Platinum is the new top tier, and it launches during 2027.

Platinum’s core benefit is the unlimited Companion Pass. Platinum members can also select any available seat at booking, including extra legroom seats when available, and board ahead of Gold members.

The Companion Pass moves behind status

This is the change people will argue about. The Companion Pass previously had its own separate qualification tracking. From 2027 it runs on the same TQP currency as elite status.

Unlimited Companion Pass requires Platinum — 140,000 TQPs or 100 qualifying flights. For 2027 only, Southwest is adding a 10,000 TQP bonus once you reach 130,000, which makes the effective bar 130,000 TQPs next year.

There is also a new lower tier: 95,000 TQPs or 75 qualifying flights earns a Companion Pass good for three flights, where a one-way or a round trip each count as one.

Card spend gets cut to the bone

Every Southwest credit card now earns 1 TQP per $1 spent. Category multipliers — the 2x and 3x bonuses — still earn Rapid Rewards points as usual, but they contribute only 1x toward TQPs.

More consequentially, these stop earning TQPs entirely as of January 1, 2027, and therefore stop counting toward the Companion Pass:

  • New Cardmember welcome bonuses
  • Referral bonuses
  • Anniversary points
  • The bonus portion of category multipliers (earn 2x on gas, only 1x counts)
  • Partner spend such as hotel and car bookings

Shopping portal earnings fall under the same logic and will not count.

For anyone who has been running the standard playbook — open a personal card and a business card in the same year, clear both bonuses, walk away with a two-year Companion Pass — that path closes at the end of 2026.

December 2, 2026 is the date that matters

Southwest has been explicit on this point. Cardmembers approved on or before December 2, 2026 who then meet the welcome bonus requirements will have those points count as Companion Pass qualifying points, even if the spend threshold is met in early 2027.

The practical implication: get approved before December 2, finish the spend in early 2027, and you can hold a Companion Pass for most of 2027 and all of 2028 under the old rules.

Current welcome offers sit at 50k to 60k on the personal cards and 80k on the business card. Those are not all-time highs, but the deadline — not the offer size — is what makes this worth acting on.

Fare multipliers come down

Two of the fare buckets earn less from 2027:

  • Choice Preferred: 10x drops to 8x
  • Choice Extra: 14x drops to 10x

What is actually getting better

The overhaul is not all takeaways.

Starting in spring 2027, Rapid Rewards points become redeemable on Icelandair, China Airlines and Etihad, including premium cabins. For a program that has never had a single airline partner, that is a genuine expansion — Southwest points have historically been worth a fixed amount against Southwest fares and nothing else.

Southwest is also adding Milestone Rewards, allowing points to be used for seat upgrades, and has confirmed a new premium credit card arriving in 2027 that will unlock lounge access.

How to think about it

Three different people should read this three different ways.

If you were going to get a Southwest card anyway, December 2 is a hard deadline. Approval has to land on or before that date; the spend can follow into 2027.

If you fly Southwest regularly, recalculate. 140,000 TQPs is a serious annual target, and card spend now contributes at a flat 1 TQP per dollar, so the card is a much weaker lever than it used to be. The 95,000 TQP tier with three companion flights may be the realistic goal for most frequent flyers.

If you hold the cards mainly for the Companion Pass and nothing else, the value proposition after 2026 changes substantially. Worth revisiting whether the annual fees still earn their place in your wallet.

Details are still rolling out, and terms are subject to change — confirm against the issuer’s and the airline’s official pages before applying. If you do take a card before the deadline, track the welcome bonus spend window carefully: the December 2 approval date and the three-month spend clock are two separate deadlines, and missing the second one makes the first one pointless. MaxWorth tracks welcome bonus progress and deadlines per card if you want it handled automatically.
