Best Uses for the World of Hyatt Category 1-4 Free Night Award in 2026
Where to use the Category 1-4 Free Night Award from the Chase World of Hyatt card after Hyatt's May 2026 award chart and category changes: the rules, the traps, and 18 hotels worth the certificate.
Quick answer
The Chase World of Hyatt card gives you a free night at any Category 1-4 Hyatt every anniversary, and a second one if you spend $15,000 in a calendar year. Aim it at a Category 4 hotel on a date when the cash rate is $300 or more: busy city weekends, peak beach or lake season, or a strong-season resort abroad. Before you book, check that the hotel is still Category 4 after Hyatt’s May 2026 reshuffle and that a standard room is actually bookable on award.
Why this one certificate matters
The card costs $95 a year. A single free night at a Category 4 hotel that charges $300 to $500 cash covers the fee three to five times over, before you count anything else the card does.
Hyatt’s award chart change makes the certificate worth a bit more on paper. Since May 20, 2026, each category prices at five levels (Lowest, Low, Moderate, Upper, Top) instead of the old off-peak, standard and peak. Category 4 now tops out at 25,000 points a night, up from 18,000 at peak under the old chart. The certificate covers a standard room at any of those levels, so on a Top-priced night it saves you the full 25,000 points.
The catch is that its value swings with how you use it. Redeem it at a $150 suburban Hyatt Place and you have roughly broken even on the fee. Redeem it at a lakefront resort in August or a Venice hotel in spring and you have turned a $95 card into a few hundred dollars of hotel.
The rules, quickly
- Earning it: one award each year after your cardmember anniversary, issued within about 10 weeks per Chase’s terms. A second one arrives as a one-time bonus each calendar year after $15,000 in purchases, within about 8 weeks.
- Business card: the $199 World of Hyatt Business card does not include a free night. Its main hotel perk is up to $100 a year in Hyatt statement credits ($50, twice per anniversary year).
- Where it works: any Hyatt designated Category 1, 2, 3 or 4, standard room only.
- Where it doesn’t: Category 5-8 hotels, Miraval, Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara (excluded by name in Chase’s terms), other all-inclusive resorts on Hyatt’s separate A-F chart, and Mr & Mrs Smith properties. Small Luxury Hotels of the World left World of Hyatt in May 2024, so SLH is not an option either.
- Pricing level doesn’t matter: Lowest through Top all qualify, as long as the hotel is Category 1-4 and a standard room is available.
- Expiration: 12 months from issuance. Your checkout date must be before the expiration date. Hyatt does not generally extend these awards.
- Fees: resort, destination and facility fees are waived on the certificate night (Hyatt Residence Club resorts excepted). Parking, food and incidentals are on you.
- No top-ups: you can’t add points to use it at a Category 5 hotel or to book a better room, and suite upgrade awards can’t be applied to a free night stay.
- Booking: online in your World of Hyatt account. Search with points, and the certificate shows as an option on eligible standard rooms.
- Longer stays: use Hyatt’s Pay My Way to combine the certificate with points or cash nights on one reservation. If you hold more than one certificate, the website may apply the one expiring soonest; call Hyatt if you need a specific one used.
One more free night type to know about: World of Hyatt elites earn a Category 1-4 award at 30 qualifying nights and a Category 1-7 award at 60 nights. Those come from status, not the card, and the 1-7 award opens up a much bigger list than this guide covers.
The traps (read this before you search)
1. Your hotel may have changed category. Hyatt moved 136 hotels on May 20, 2026: 112 went up, 24 went down. Several favorite certificate hotels moved from Category 4 to 5 and are now out of reach for new bookings, including:
| Moved 4 to 5 (no longer eligible) | Location |
|---|---|
| Hyatt Regency Seattle | Seattle |
| Hyatt Regency Jersey City on the Hudson | New Jersey |
| Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress | Orlando |
| Hyatt Regency Coral Gables | Miami area |
| Hyatt Centric Las Olas | Fort Lauderdale |
| Hotel Figueroa | Los Angeles |
| Hyatt Regency Lisbon | Portugal |
| Hyatt Regency Hesperia Madrid | Spain |
If you are following an older “best uses” list, check every hotel’s current category on its Hyatt page. Hyatt reviews categories periodically, so this year’s Category 4 can be next year’s Category 5.
2. Category 4 on paper, no standard rooms in practice. The certificate needs an available standard room. Popular hotels, especially beach properties like Hyatt Place Waikiki Beach, can be hard to book on award during peak dates. Search the award calendar a few months out, and treat the certificate as a reason to plan early rather than a last-minute fix.
3. All-inclusives play by a different chart. Hyatt’s all-inclusive resorts are priced on a separate Category A-F chart. Chase’s terms specifically exclude Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara, and the Category 1-4 certificate can’t be used at A-F all-inclusive resorts at all. If you see a Hyatt Ziva or Zilara described somewhere as “Category 4,” that doesn’t make it certificate-eligible.
4. The expiration date is about checkout. A certificate that expires on June 30 can’t be used for a June 30 checkout. Book with a margin.

Best uses: 18 hotels worth the certificate
Every hotel below was Category 1-4 as of October 2026 and was not moved out of that range in May 2026. Cash rates are typical ranges seen in 2025-2026 and move a lot with season and events, so treat them as a guide to relative value rather than a quote. Confirm category and award availability on Hyatt’s site before you plan around one.

New to Category 4 after May 2026
These moved down into certificate range on May 20, 2026. Cash pricing under the new category is not yet well documented, so check your own dates:
- The Standard, Singapore (Category 5 to 4): near Orchard Road and the Botanic Gardens, with an outdoor pool
- Dream Nashville (5 to 4): downtown Nashville, where event weekends push cash rates up
- Also newly in range: Hyatt Centric Congress Avenue Austin (5 to 4), Andaz Macau (5 to 4), and Hyatt Centric Playa del Carmen (4 to 3)
Five practical rules
- Spend it on your most expensive night. On a multi-night trip, use the certificate for the Saturday or the event night and pay the cheaper nights with points or cash through Pay My Way.
- Check the category the week you book, not the week you read a list. Hyatt’s May 2026 moves knocked several longtime favorites out of range. The hotel’s own Hyatt page is the only source that matters.
- Let seasonality do the work. The certificate costs you the same whether the room is $220 or $900. Kotor Bay in August or Venice in spring gets far more from it than an off-season weekday.
- Book early, then adjust. Standard-room award availability is the scarce part. Most Hyatt award reservations can be canceled before the hotel’s deadline, so it costs little to lock in a date and adjust later. Check the cancellation terms on your booking.
- Don’t let it expire. If the 12-month window is closing, a $200+ city night still beats letting it lapse. Remember your checkout date must fall before the expiration date.
Our take
The Category 1-4 certificate is the reason most people keep the World of Hyatt card, and it still clears the $95 fee easily. But 2026 made it a little harder to use well. Hyatt moved more hotels up than down, so the list of strong Category 4 options in big US cities got shorter, and there’s no way to top it up into Category 5.
The good news is that the certificate itself didn’t lose ground. It covers a Category 4 standard room even at the new 25,000-point Top level, and the best uses abroad, from Montenegro to Mendoza to Siem Reap, were left untouched by the reshuffle. If you spend $15,000 a year on the card, the second certificate turns a good card into a clearly profitable one.
The most common way people lose value isn’t picking the wrong hotel. It’s forgetting the certificate until month eleven. MaxWorth tracks each certificate’s expiration date alongside your other card benefits, so it’s on your radar while there’s still time to plan a good stay. Card terms checked against Chase’s World of Hyatt card pages on October 7, 2026. Category changes reflect Hyatt’s May 20, 2026 update. Cash rates are typical ranges and change with dates; always confirm the current category and standard-room availability on Hyatt’s site before booking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I use the World of Hyatt Category 1-4 Free Night Award?
At any Hyatt hotel or resort currently designated Category 1 through 4, as long as a standard room is available for your dates. It is not valid at Category 5-8 hotels, at Miraval, Hyatt Ziva or Hyatt Zilara resorts, at other all-inclusive resorts priced on Hyatt's separate A-F chart, or at Mr & Mrs Smith properties.
Does the certificate still work when a Category 4 hotel is priced at the new 'Top' level?
Yes. Since Hyatt's May 20, 2026 chart change, Category 4 hotels price at five levels, topping out at 25,000 points a night. The certificate is tied to the hotel's category, not the points price, so it covers a standard room at any of the five levels.
How long is the free night valid?
12 months from the date it's issued, and your checkout date has to fall before the expiration date. Hyatt does not generally extend these awards, so plan the stay well before month twelve.
How many Category 1-4 free nights does the card give me each year?
One each year after your cardmember anniversary (Chase says to allow up to 10 weeks for it to arrive), plus a second one as a one-time bonus each calendar year once you spend $15,000 on purchases (allow up to 8 weeks). The $199 World of Hyatt Business card does not include a free night.
Are resort fees covered on a free night?
Yes. Chase's terms say resort, destination and facility fees are waived on the redeemed Free Night Award, except at Hyatt Residence Club resorts. You still pay for parking, food and other incidentals.
Can I combine the free night with points or cash for a longer stay?
Yes. Hyatt's Pay My Way option lets you mix the certificate with points or a cash rate on the other nights of one reservation. If it gives you trouble, book the nights separately and ask the hotel to link them so you don't have to change rooms.
What happens if my hotel moves to Category 5 before my stay?
Check before you book. Hotels that moved from Category 4 to 5 on May 20, 2026, such as Hyatt Regency Seattle and Hyatt Regency Lisbon, can no longer be booked with the certificate for new reservations. Hyatt reshuffles categories periodically, so confirm the current category on the hotel's Hyatt page.
Can I upgrade a free night stay to a suite with points?
No. The award is for a standard room only, you can't top it off with points to book a better room, and suite upgrade awards can't be applied to free night stays. Elite room upgrades still apply where your status earns them.
