Best Uses for the World of Hyatt Category 1-7 Free Night Award in 2026

The Category 1-7 Free Night Award comes from 60 nights, 100 nights or Lifetime Globalist, not from the credit card. How to earn it, the 180-day rules, what it's worth under Hyatt's May 2026 chart, every Category 7 hotel, and the Category 6 hotels worth it.

Quick answer

The Category 1-7 Free Night Award is Hyatt’s reward for 60 nights, 100 nights, or Lifetime Globalist status. It is not a credit card benefit. It expires in 180 days, covers a standard room at any hotel up to Category 7 at any price level, and is therefore worth up to 55,000 points. Use it at a Category 7 hotel on a date when the cash rate is $500 or more, or at a strong Category 6 hotel if nothing in Category 7 fits your trip. Using it at a Category 5 big-city Park Hyatt works, but you’re spending a 55,000-point award on a 15,000 to 35,000-point night.

If the award in your account is the Category 1-4 one from the Chase card, read our Category 1-4 free night guide instead.

The Chase World of Hyatt card matters here in one way: nights. It gives 5 Tier-Qualifying Night credits every year plus 2 more for every $5,000 you spend, and award nights booked with any Free Night Award also count. Its own two certificates, the anniversary night and the one for $15,000 in a calendar year, are Category 1-4. The $199 World of Hyatt Business card has no free night; its $50,000-spend benefit is a 10% points rebate.

The rules, quickly

  • 180 days. The clock starts when Hyatt issues the award, which for the 60-night milestone is usually late in the year. Your checkout date has to fall on or before the expiration date, and Hyatt’s terms say the period will not be extended.
  • Standard room, any price level. No blackout dates. If a standard room is bookable at the Standard Rate, the award works, including on the Top level that costs 55,000 points at Category 7.
  • Category 1-7 and all-inclusive A-D. It also works at Inclusive Collection resorts rated A through D on Hyatt’s separate all-inclusive chart, for up to two adults. Not E or F.
  • Not valid at Category 8, Miraval, Mr & Mrs Smith, Homes & Hideaways, Lindblad (points-only), or properties without standard rooms such as most Hyatt Vacation Club residences.
  • No stacking. Guest of Honor, Suite Upgrade and Club Access Awards can’t be applied to a stay booked with this award. Elite upgrades at the desk still apply.
  • Fees. Resort and destination fees are waived; Globalists also park free. Taxes are not waived.
  • It counts. The night is a Tier-Qualifying Night.
  • Transferable once to another member, or bookable in someone else’s name, with the same expiration date.

What the award is worth

Hyatt replaced off-peak, standard and peak pricing with five levels on May 20, 2026. The award is tied to the hotel’s category, not the price level, so its value is whatever the night would have cost in points.

8 (not covered)35,00045,00055,00065,00075,000

Two things follow. First, the award’s ceiling is a Category 7 hotel on a Top date: 55,000 points, which at the 2 cents per point MaxWorth uses for World of Hyatt is about $1,100 of value. Second, the gap between Category 6 and 7 is only 5,000 points at the Lowest level but 15,000 at Top. A Category 7 hotel on a Top-priced date is where the award works hardest.

The traps

  1. Category 8 crept up. Five hotels that were Category 7 in April 2026 are now Category 8 and off the table: Andaz 5th Avenue and Park Hyatt London River Thames among them. Older “best Category 7” lists still show them. Check the category on hyatt.com before you plan.
  2. Residences and villas without standard rooms. Five of the 35 Category 7 listings are Hyatt Vacation Club or Residences properties. Most don’t sell standard rooms and can’t be booked on award. The all-villa Lost Stone Villas in Yunnan is a similar case to check before you count on it.
  3. 180 days is short. If the award lands in November, it has to be used, checkout included, by May. Book early and adjust; most Hyatt award stays can be canceled before the hotel’s deadline.
  4. All-inclusive E and F are excluded. The Ziva and Zilara flagships in Cancun and Cap Cana sit at E and F. Check the letter before you plan a beach week around the award.
  5. One room. The award is one standard room. For two rooms you need two awards or points for the second room.

Park Hyatt Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hangzhou, Andaz Shenzhen Bay and Shanghai ITC, and Alila Shanghai are all Category 5, with cash rates mostly in the CN¥2,000-4,600 range. The award works at all of them, but you’d be spending a 55,000-point award on a 15,000 to 35,000-point night. Grand Hyatt and Andaz Macau are Category 4 and Grand Hyatt Taipei is Category 3, so nothing in Macau or Taiwan justifies this award.

Five practical rules

  1. Target Category 7 on a Top-priced date. That’s the only way to get the full 55,000 points out of it. Park Hyatt Maldives, Park Hyatt St. Kitts, Park Hyatt Aviara and the Vail hotels in ski season are the clearest cases.
  2. Check the category on the day you book. Hyatt’s annual reshuffle takes effect in May, and the May 2026 round moved five hotels from 7 to 8. A hotel that drops to 6 is still fine; one that rises to 8 is gone.
  3. Book the standard room first, then think about the suite. Suite Upgrade Awards can’t be applied to this stay, so if you want a suite, book it on points instead and use the free night somewhere else.
  4. Don’t let the 180 days slide. The award usually lands when you cross 60 nights, often in Q4, so the window closes in spring. Book a refundable award stay early and change it later.
  5. A Category 5 night is a fallback, not a plan. If the award is about to expire, a $400 Park Hyatt Shanghai night still beats nothing. But plan the trip around a 7 while you have time.

Our take

This award is the real prize of Globalist status. It is more flexible than the credit card’s Category 1-4 night, it works at hotels that cost 55,000 points on the dates you’d actually want, and the hotels that qualify include some of the best Hyatt has: Park Hyatt Maldives, Park Hyatt St. Kitts, Alila Jabal Akhdar, Park Hyatt Vienna.

The two things that waste it are the clock and complacency. 180 days is short when the award arrives in November. And because it’s so flexible, it’s tempting to burn it on a convenient Category 5 city night. If you earned 60 nights, you can plan one trip around a Category 7.

MaxWorth tracks each award’s expiration date alongside your other card benefits, so the 180 days doesn’t sneak up on you. For the Category 1-4 night from the Chase card, see our Category 1-4 guide, and for how the card stacks up against other hotel cards, our hotel credit card rankings.

Milestone and award terms checked against the World of Hyatt program terms (effective August 24, 2026), Hyatt’s awards FAQ and Chase’s card pages on October 8, 2026. Categories reflect hyatt.com’s hotel listings on October 8, 2026, after Hyatt’s May 20, 2026 chart and category changes. Points values per level are as published by AwardWallet and The Points Guy after the May 2026 launch. Cash rates are samples and change with dates; always confirm the current category and standard-room award availability on Hyatt’s site before booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get a World of Hyatt Category 1-7 Free Night Award?

Three ways: reach 60 qualifying nights (or 100,000 Base Points) in a calendar year, reach 100 nights, or hold Lifetime Globalist status, which issues one every year around March 1. The Chase World of Hyatt credit cards do not issue one. The consumer card's anniversary night and $15,000-spend night are both Category 1-4, and the business card has no free night at all.

How long is the Category 1-7 award valid?

180 days from the date it's issued, and your checkout date must fall on or before the expiration date. Hyatt's terms say the redemption period will not be extended, so plan the stay as soon as the award lands.

Can I use it on peak dates or at the 'Top' price level?

Yes. Free Night Awards have no blackout dates and work whenever a standard room is available at the Standard Rate, at any of the five price levels Hyatt introduced in May 2026. At a Category 7 hotel on a Top date the award replaces 55,000 points.

Can I use the Category 1-7 award at a Category 8 hotel?

No. Category 8 is outside the award, and the May 2026 reshuffle moved Andaz 5th Avenue, Hôtel du Louvre, Park Hyatt London River Thames, Hyatt Regency Aruba and Hotel Flüela Davos up to Category 8. Only the 150-night Ultimate Free Night Award covers Category 8.

Does it work at Hyatt's all-inclusive resorts?

Yes, at Inclusive Collection resorts rated Category A through D on Hyatt's all-inclusive chart (not E or F), for up to two adults with no additional guests. The Category 1-4 and credit-card awards do not work at all-inclusives.

Can I combine it with a Guest of Honor or Suite Upgrade Award?

No. Hyatt's terms exclude Category 1-7 Free Night Awards from Guest of Honor, Suite Upgrade and Club Access Awards. Elite room upgrades at check-in still apply where your status earns them, and Globalists get the resort fee waived and free parking on award nights.

Does a free night stay count toward elite status?

Yes. A night redeemed with a Free Night Award is a Tier-Qualifying Night, so it counts toward next year's status and milestones.

Can I give the award to someone else?

Yes. Category 1-7 awards can be transferred once to another World of Hyatt member while still valid, or you can book the stay in another person's name. The expiration date doesn't change.
